The best way to prepare for a lost pet is before it happens. Make sure your pet’s collar tags list your current contact details and that their microchip information is updated. With many local businesses and neighbors equipped with chip scanners, this simple step can make reuniting with your pet quick and stress-free.

What to do if you've lost your animal
The first few hours are terrifying but critical when you've lost your beloved pet. Here are some helpful things to do if you find yourself in this situation.
01
Post on social media (personal & neighborhood groups)
Post a picture of your lost animal with your contact information on your own pages, but also the following social media platforms to help get your friends and neighbors on the lookout for them. If you can't immediately get in, see if any of your friends are in the group and can post on your behalf.

02
Grab a leash, treats, and/or a favorite toy.
When your pet first gets out, they may think this is a game of chase. It may even seem harmless until they chase a mouse, rabbit, or squirrel or they get scared by a car. Do not chase the animal! If you can call them to "Want to go on a walk?" or "Want a treat", it's much easier to get your animal to come back to you using their favorite words while you quickly slide on the leash.
03
Air out your dirty laundry (literally)
Your pet knows your scent, and it can help bring them home. If your pet is still lost once it gets dark outside, put out a laundry basket of dirty clothes. If you can open your garage slightly to allow your pet in but not larger animals (or humans) it can be a safe place for them to hide if they make it home overnight.
04
Notify Animal Control and your microchip company (if applicable)
Report your lost animal to Frisco Animal Services. This will help them to connect your animal back to you if they are found by someone else. This is why it's recommended to make sure your contact information is up to date on your pet's microchip.

What to do if you've found a lost pet
First, thank you for helping out! If you are easily and safely able to get the animal into a enclosed space like your backyard or garage, getting them into a confined place is a great way to get them out of harm's way. If you are unable to or are scared to, that's ok! Call the Frisco Police Non-emergency number at 972-292-6010 and report where you last saw the animal. If you are able to keep eyes on them until they arrive, even better! If there is an immediate danger to public safety, you can also call 9-1-1.
